Different languages sometimes don't have the same idioms or structure as English. An example of this is honorifics in Japanese - adding "-san" or "-chan" or "-kun" to the end of names. This is essential to the language, and without it, you can come across as extremely rude.
So, it's strange that in the dub of NatM 4, Jedediah and Octavius don't use honorifics for each other, right? Well, not exactly - honorifics can be omitted if the relationship is very close, such as spouses, confidants, and very close friends. What does this mean when you translate that context back into English? Well, some fans think that this makes them "canon in Japan." That's why translations are needed - for fun comparisons like this!
We also accept translations into constructed languages (conlangs) and languages that are not widely spoken any longer (ex. Ancient Latin/Greek, Old English, etc).
