Night at the Museum

Wall Intervention Scene

Ian went through the dub of NATM 1 to see what he could find, and took notes from this scene.

• No one’s using honorifics for each other, no -san, -kun, or -chan. It is unknown if that’s common for dubs of Western media. Not using honorifics can be extremely disrespectful if you don’t know the person all that well; and with close relationships like spouses and family you can drop them. They go from enemies to found family without the language having to change.
• In this version, Larry calls them “chibi” instead of “tiny/teeny”. Chibi (ちび) means small, dwarf, or “shorty”. He later says “chibi otoko” (男), literally “tiny man”.
• Jed’s not saying Gigantor in this dub, he’s saying “dekaotoko”. “Dekai” (でかい) means “big”, and “otoko” makes it “big man”. It’s spoken like one word, so it’s essentially “gigantor”.
• Octavius has a lot more sass in this version. He doesn’t say “It’s Octavius, Mary”. He just goes “Octavius, Mary.”
• When Larry picks up Octavius, he says “watashi wa shogun dazo”, literally “I am a general”. “Dazo” makes one sound arrogant.
• Instead of “don’t be a kiss-ass”, Larry says “kobirun janai”. Literally, “don’t flatter me”, specifically in an informal tone.

Battle of the Smithsonian

Ian went through the dub of NATM 2 to see what he could find, and took notes from the film.

• Some English words were kept verbatim. Ed says “big news” with Japanese phonetics, McPhee still says “success story”, Amelia says “guts” to replace moxie, The Thinker says “macho power” instead of “firepower” (and he still sings it), The Einsteins' “that's the way we like it” was dubbed (and sung), Kahmunrah calls Larry “misuta (mister) Daley” (despite the lack of honorifics in the dub),
• Attila's lines were not dubbed, nor were the Neanderthals, the Cupids' singing, the Degas ballet dancer, .
• They dubbed the Robin Williams noises the Teddy hologram makes.
• Jedediah continues to call Larry “dekaotoko”.
• “I.T.T.” (intent to touch) was translated as “S.K.” (sawaru ki). He calls larry “manman”, which means either “total” (in reference to the ITT), or “cunt” (to replace “homie”).
• Kahmunrah's line “English, perhaps?” was translated as “America-jin ka?”, literally “Are you American?”
• Custer's line “sac-in-the-box” becomes “soko no anata”. literally, “you over there”.
• “Old Jedediah will be fine” becomes “Jedediah daijobu”, literally “Jedediah’s ok”
• Jed still calls kah “delusional” (moso), “weirdo” (henshin), and “goofy” (ahou, “foolish”).
• Ivan uses something like “abarete”. Ian assumes it’s the root “abare”, meaning “the riotous”.
• Instead of “Oh, dash it, the pain”, the Teddy bust says “kuso daitakai”. Ian can’t find what dai ka tai could be, but kuso translates to “shit”.
• “Jimmyjacked” becomes “do tsubo ne dobon”. Tsubo means a basin of a waterfall, and dobon is the sound of something heavy falling into water, so this is likely an idiom.
• Some of Ivan's Russian phrases were kept, such as da and nyet, but others were omitted, such as streltsi.
• Despite the lack of honorifics, Larry is still referred to as
• Amelia says “tanoshimu ne”, literally “have fun”. Ne is often used as a question mark — “have fun, ok?”
• The Dexter subtitle jokes were kept.
